Winter Growing Plants

Thursday 26 November 2015

Most primulas, poppies and ferns are growing now so this is the best time to pot them up. They should not be put into anything larger than a 9cm pot. They won't like it!

The best growing temperature for primulas is 12°C or less so they are best kept under cover in a greenhouse or polytunnel. Now is the optimum time as they are best planted before they flower. The varieties now available are:

  • Dark Rosaleen - dark glossy foliage with antique burgundy striped pink flower
  • Strong Beer - deep violet-purple polyanthus type flowers
  • Katy McSparron - full double deep yellow scented cowslips
  • Tomato Red - vigrous plant with unusual tomato red flowers
  • Drumcliffe
Handsome dark foliage will compliment the peachy white flowers in Spring.
An example of well rooted plugs.

Poppies growing season starts in September following a brief summer dormant period after flowering. They continue to grow until they flower again in May/June. We now have available Royal Wedding, Snow Goose, Heartbeat and Aglaja.

Papaver Snow Goose plugs. This poppy has semi-double ivory flowers with a pink frill.
Papaver Royal Wedding. White pleated with palest pink flush.

Ferns are putting on lush green new growth now, unfurling their new fronds and putting out new roots. We have:

  • Dryopteris varieties
  • Asplenium scolopendrium 'Angustatum'
  • Polystichum varieties
Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' Asplenium scolopendrium 'Angustatum' Polystichum setiferum 'Herrenhausen'
Maintains coppery pink tinged new fronds for many months then pale green. AGM. This evergreen fern likes shade but not too dry. AGM. A graceful evergreen fern that tolerates even dry shade.

This is just a selection of the winter growing plants. Please refer to our current availability list for the full range.
